The vineyards
of Augusta Bixler Farms encompass
approximately 300 acres on
Union Island in the South San Joaquin Delta.
Here, the rich fertile sandy-loam delta soils,
along with a unique microclimate make this
location ideal for growing premium wine
grapes. Warm summer days leading to
predictably cool Delta breezes each evening*,
are key elements contributing to ideal fruit
ripeness and the creation of Bixler Vineyards
wines.
Chip Salmon,
General Manager for Augusta Bixler Farms, is
responsible for the Zinfandel, Merlot, Pinot
Gris, Viognier and Chardonnay varietals grown on
the island. Although he utilizes some of the
latest technology, he also incorporates many
traditional, old-world farming practices. Chip’s
attention to detail includes the needs of the
vines, as well as the stewardship of the land
required to protect the Delta and surrounding
wildlife. In his efforts to provide a clean,
safe, natural product, Chip always has the best
interest of the environment top of mind.
Winemaker, Heather Pyle, consults with Chip
throughout the course of the growing season, and
together, they make the decisions that carefully
nurture the vines to assure the producing of top
quality grapes.
Augusta Bixler
Farms has been family owned since the 1800’s and
was instrumental in the development of what is
now considered the South Delta. The family farms
with environmentally friendly techniques, going
above and beyond all government regulations
where food safely and handling are concerned.
According to Chip, putting consumer concerns
before his own is paramount. “We want our
customers to enjoy our wines and to know and
appreciate the story behind them,” noted Chip.
“After all, we build our wines for the consumer
and encourage any feedback.”
* In the
South Delta Region, evening temperatures drop
well below those in most of the Central Valley.
